چکیده

We present experimental investigations of the spatial and temporal evolution of particle migration in pressure driven flows of Brownian particle suspensions. Binary suspensions of 1.4 and 3.0 m diameter colloidal particles are pumped through a 50 500 m2 rectangular-cross-section capillary tube. Shear rate gradients caused by the resulting parabolic velocity profile drive the particles away from the walls toward the center of the channel, where the shear rate is lowest. The flows are directly imaged using high-speed laser scanning confocal microscopy. Size segregation of the particles is observed. Depending on the conditions, either the large or the small particles enrich the center. We measure the development of the size segregation by tracking the evolution of the cross-stream concentrations of the particles. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2907378

Hydrodynamic segregation in a bidisperse colloidal suspension in microchannel flow: A theoretical study.

Colloids in suspension exhibit shear-induced migration towards regions of low viscous shear. In dense bidisperse colloidal suspensions under pressure driven flow large particles can segregate in the center of a microchannel and the suspension partially demixes. To develop a theoretical understanding of these effects, we formulate a phenomenological model for the particle currents based on the w...

Rheology of binary colloidal structures assembled via specific biological cross-linking.

The selectivity and range of energies offered by specific biological interactions serve as valuable tools for engineering the assembly of colloidal particles into novel materials. In this investigation, high affinity biological interactions between biotin-coated "A" particles (RA = 0.475 microm) and streptavidin-coated "B" particles (RB = 2.75 microm) drive the self-assembly of a series of bina...

Shear-induced configurations of confined colloidal suspensions.

We show that geometric confinement dramatically affects the shear-induced configurations of dense monodisperse colloidal suspensions; a new structure emerges, where layers of particles buckle to stack in a more efficient packing. The volume fraction in the shear zone is controlled by a balance between the viscous stresses and the osmotic pressure of a contacting reservoir of unsheared particles...

Assembly of vorticity-aligned hard-sphere colloidal strings in a simple shear flow.

Colloidal suspensions self-assemble into equilibrium structures ranging from face- and body-centered cubic crystals to binary ionic crystals, and even kagome lattices. When driven out of equilibrium by hydrodynamic interactions, even more diverse structures can be accessed. However, mechanisms underlying out-of-equilibrium assembly are much less understood, though such processes are clearly rel...

Schematic models for dynamic yielding of sheared colloidal glasses.

The nonlinear rheological properties of dense suspensions are discussed within simplified models, suggested by a recent first principles approach to the model of Brownian particles in a constant-velocity-gradient solvent flow. Shear thinning of colloidal fluids and dynamical yielding of colloidal glasses arise from a competition between a slowing down of structural relaxation, because of partic...
